Different cultures honor those who have passed in different ways and on different days of the year. In America, Halloween is celebrated on October 31. According to History.com, the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The integration of Samhain and All Saints Day in the 8th century resulted in All Hallows Eve which later became Halloween. Halloween is now a commercial success with trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, festive gatherings, and amazing costumes.
We are not sure of who or when MIT started the tradition of all staff passing out treats from their classrooms and offices. We are happy to continue celebrating Halloween's commercial aspects with our students. At Mare Island Technology Academy School, this event has evolved to include a haunted escape room. There is a high participation rate in donning costumes by students and staff. Our families have generously donated treats to make it a fun and festive event for the students. Our “Teach or Treat” begins shortly after school dismissal and ends when all the treats are gone.
